A one-day excursion from Tbilisi through thousands of years of history: from Christian UNESCO shrines to pagan caves and the Stalin Museum
Embark on a fascinating journey through the most contrasting pages of Georgian history!
In one day, you’ll see the UNESCO-listed shrines of the first ancient capital, uncover the mysteries of an ancient cave city dedicated to pagan gods, and visit the birthplace of one of the most controversial figures of the 20th century—Joseph Stalin.
Program:
- Departure from Tbilisi towards the ancient capital.
- Jvari Temple (7th century): A legendary mountaintop monastery with a breathtaking view of the confluence of the Aragvi and Kura rivers. The site that inspired Lermontov’s poem «Mtsyri,» where Saint Nino erected the first cross, is also where the monastery was founded.
- Svetitskhoveli Cathedral (11th century): The country’s main spiritual center and a UNESCO site housing the greatest Christian relics.
- A stroll through Mtskheta: Cozy streets lined with souvenir shops where you can buy the best homemade churchkhela and Georgian spices.
- Gori – Joseph Stalin’s Birthplace: A tour of the leader’s memorial museum. You’ll see the house where Stalin was born, his personal belongings, a surviving sculpture, and his famous armored train car.
- Uplistsikhe Cave City («Fortress of the Almighty»): One of Georgia’s most ancient cave cities (2nd-1st millennia BC). Explore pagan sun temples, sacrificial sites, a Hellenistic theater, and secret underground tunnels carved directly into the cliffs.
- Return to Tbilisi.
