Breakfast and departure for the tour Mtskheta
A trip to Mtskheta is like a journey through time. The city was founded in the first century BC.This the very first capital of Georgia – after it took the title of Tbilisi. But Mtskheta remained the spiritual heart of the country: it was here that Christianity was first adopted, back in 327 AD,for modern standards, it is not even a city, but rather a large village, but everyone will feel the former greatness, and most importantly, the spirit of the times here, even just by walking along the streets. Mtskheta is popular among tourists from all over the world, because the Georgian authorities are investing money in restoring monuments that have reached our days. There are few of them in the city itself, in fact there are three main ones: the Samtavro monastery, the Svetitskhoveli cathedral and the Bebristsikhe fortress.
Dinner and continuation of the excursion in Tbilisi.
According to legend, during the reign of Vakhtang Gorgasali on the site of Tbilisi there were dense forests. And so, during one of the hunts, the royal falcon chased a pheasant and the birds disappeared into the gorge. When Vakhtang Gorgasali went down there, he saw that the falcon with a pheasant in its claws was already boiled in a boiling spring. These were the same sulfur springs, in which now you can swim – the famous sulfur baths of Tbilisi. The king liked the place and he ordered to build a city here, which was named Tbilisi (“the city of warm keys”) in honor of these waters. Translated from the Georgian language, the word “tbili” means “warm”. And this is true, Tbilisi is a very warm and sunny city, even at a time when it is cold and cloudy outside!
Breakfast and departure to Kakheti. Visit the monastery of David Gareja.
The oldest monastery of the complex, the David’s Lavra, was founded at the beginning of VI in the Syrian monk David, one of 13 Syrian fathers who settled in the natural cave of Gareja. The complex consists of about 20 monasteries carved into the rocks and covers the territories of three regions of Georgia – Gardabani, Sagarejo and Sighnaghi. The main monastery is considered laurel of sv. David, which is located on the northern slope of the mountain that separates Georgia and Azerbaijan. The border runs along the top of the mountain, which Georgian historians call Udabno, after the name of one of the monasteries. In addition to them, on the southern slope of the mountain there are more than 100 caves that were used by the monks as cells. In many churches and refectory monasteries frescoes of the 8th — 14th centuries have been preserved with portraits of historical figures, including a portrait of Queen Tamara
Dinner and trip to Bodbe Monastery.
The Orthodox monastery, located two kilometers from Sighnaghi in Kakheti. It houses the relics of the Enlightener of Georgia, St. Nina, who died there in 347, at the age of 67, after 35 years of apostolic asceticism. Before her death, Saint Nina retired to the place of Bodbe and there, after serving some time, she died and was buried. Soon, at the request of King Mirian over the grave of St. Nina was built a temple in honor of St. George – heavenly defender of Georgia, and near it a monastery also appeared.
Then a trp to city of love Signagi
A small town in eastern Georgia, on the mountainside, in the historical region of Kakheti. Center of the Historical and Geographical Region of Kiziki. It is located on terraces, connected by winding steep streets. The name of the city comes from the Turkish word siknak (sign), meaning a fortified place, a shelter, a fortified protective structure. It is famous for its eponymous fortress, which is included in the list of the most famous and large fortresses of Georgia. The walls of the Signan fortress miraculously survived and today surround the old part of the city and go far beyond the city borders. On the perimeter of the walls there are 28 watchtowers, from there u can see awonderful view of the Alazani valley opens. In Signagi, according to local legend, the enamored artist Niko Pirosmani covered the square in front of the hotel with flowers where the beloved woman lived – French actress Margarita de Sevres. This is song in a popular song performed by Alla Pugachova and its called Million roses.
And you will rest in the guest house of city
Breakfast and trip to Nekresi monastery
Initially, this place was the ancient city of Nekresi. In the VI century, a monastery appeared near the city, which was founded by one of the Assyrian fathers, Abo Nekreseli (He is Aviv or Abibos). Since the entire region was then under Persian occupation, the monastic movement was experiencing certain difficulties. Friction with the Zoroastrians led to the Persians taking Abo Nekreseli to Mtskheta and executed there. For this reason, the body of the founder of the monastery is buried not in Nekresi, it is in the Samtavro temple of Mtskheta. Later, the monastery suffered many times from invasions of various kinds. They say that during one such invasion monks put a herd of pigs in the monastery and the Muslims were ashamed to go there. Therefore, there is a tradition in the monastery to make shish kebabs of pork for holidays.
Kakheti is well-known with a lot of kind of wines. So in Kvareli you can taste it in winery
Telavi is known from the 1st century AD and it was an important trading center on the caravan route from the Middle East to Europe. In the XI and from the XVII to XVIII centuries it was the capital of the Kakhetian kingdom. The ancient city of Telavi preserved ancient monuments of architecture, culture and art. The natural masterpiece is the Alazani Valley, which offers superb panoramas from different points of the city of Telavi. The main attraction of Telavi is located in the center of the city and in appearance may seem a very old. In fact, the internal buildings of the fortress is no more than three centuries, and the walls of the fortress and even less. The construction of the fortress is associated with the king of Kakheti, Erekle II, who was born and died in it. During his reign, Erekle II united the peoples of eastern Georgia, gained its independence, expelled the Kizilbashs and Persians, but at the end of his life, hoping for help from Russia, received a serious defeat from the Arabs. With the death of Erekle II, the golden time for both Telavi and independence for Georgia ended. The son of Erekle II, unable to endure the humiliation of the Arabs, asked the emperor of Russia to join. December 22, 1800 Georgia became part of Russia.
Dinner and departure to Alaverdi monastery
Alaverdi Monastery is a creation of Assyrian fathers, namely Joseph Alaverdi, who came here in the middle of the 6th century, built a temple and died in 570, and was buried in this temple, and the grave exists to this day. Alaverdi Cathedral was built by Kakhetian king Kvirika III the Great, who inherited Kakheti in 1010.
Ikalto Monastery – one of the first in Georgia, and in Kakheti almost the very first. It was founded by one of the Assyrian fathers, Zeno Ikaltoeli (ზენონი იყალთოელი) somewhere after the middle of the VI century. From the buildings of that era there is nothing left. The existing temples were built, at the earliest, in the VIII century. Apparently, there is some connection with the emergence of the independent Kakhetian kingdom in those centuries. In the same period, the crush room for the grapes and the wine storage, partially preserved to this day, were built on the territory of the monastery.
In the 12th century, under the king David the Builder, the Assumption Church was built and the Academy building was attached. This academy went down in history because Shota Rustaveli studied there. On this occasion, around November (at the weekend), the local holiday of Shotaoba is celebrated here. In 1616, Shah Abbas, during his famous invasion, burned down the Academy and thus put an end to its history. From that moment on, the monastery almost ceased to exist and was restored only in the 19th century.
Return to Tbilisi
Breakfast and departure to Gori (Visit to the house of Joseph Stalin)
The idea to create a museum in the house where Stalin was born, it was organized 1937. Apparently, this was an order from above, because a similar one appeared in Vologda in the same year. Beria commanded Georgia directly that year, soeverything was coordinated with him. That first museum was modest and existed on the scale of the house itself. If Stalin had visited Georgia in those years, he would have had a unique opportunity to live in a museum named after himself.By a strange coincidence, the museum appeared exactly in the year of the death of Stalin’s mother (Ekaterina Geladze),
God’s fortress is an ancient cave city, one of the first cities on the territory of Georgia. Uplistsikhe is carved in a rock located 12 km east of the town of Gori on the left bank of the Kura River. The city emerged in the late II – early I millennium BC, experienced several ups and downs, was finally abandoned in the XIX century, therefore, a multi-layered archaeological site, one of the most important monuments of Georgian culture. The uniqueness of the monument lies in the fact that, thanks to its arrangement, it retains the remains of architectural and religious buildings built over several millennia. In the heyday Uplistsikhe included more than 700 caves and cave structures, of which only 150 have survived to date.
Borjomi is famous for its therapeutic mineral water, which is used as a drinking water for diseases of the gastrointestinal tract, biliary tract, metabolism, kidneys and in the form of baths – for cardiovascular diseases, diseases of the nervous system and respiratory organs. Archaeological excavations here found stone baths, which indicates that the healing properties of mineral water were known and used in ancient times.
Dinner. A walk in the park Borjomi and then Green monastery.
Night in Akhaltsikhe
Vardzia – City of rocks
Vardzia is a cave monastic complex of the 12th — 13th centuries in southern Georgia, in Javakheti. An outstanding monument of medieval Georgian architecture. Located in the Aspindza region of Samtskhe-Javakheti, in the valley of the Kura River (Mtkvari), about 100 km south of the city of Borjomi, near the village of the same name. The ensemble of the monastery of Vardzia was created mainly in 1156-1205, during the reign of George III and his daughter, Queen Tamara. Located on the southwestern border of Georgia, the monastery-fortress blocked the gorge of the Kura River from the invasion of Iranians and Turkishs from the south. At that time, all the premises of the monastery were hidden by a rock, with only three underground passages connecting them to the surface, where large groups of soldiers could appear completely unexpectedly for the enemy. In 1193-1195, during the war with the Turkish-Selchuks, Queen Tamara was with her court in Vardzia.
On one of the roads leading from Tbilisi to the Black Sea coast, is a small beautiful town of Akhaltsikhe with a thousand-year history. It is located in the south-western part of Georgia, near the border with Turkey, and has been strategic importance, since it was located at the intersection of major roads. Even the name of the city speaks of its military past: Akhaltsikhe in translation from Georgian means “New Fortress”, and the recently renovated Fortress “Rabat” is evidence of this.In addition to the Rabat fortress, there are other attractions in Akhaltsikhe. Not far from the fortress, on a small hill is the Armenian Catholic temple of Surb Nshan, built in the XV-XVI centuries. In one of the quarters hid the domes of abandoned sulfur baths.
Lunch, return to Tbilisi and free time.
Ananuri Fortress is located in Georgia on the Georgian Military Highway, 70 km from Tbilisi, where the small Vedzathevi River flows into Aragvi. Ananuri served as the main stronghold for the Aragvian Eristaves, the rulers of this region. The fortress belongs to the early feudal era and served as an outpost of defense, blocking the road leading from the Darial Gorge.70 km north of Tbilisi on the Aragvi River is the Zhinvali reservoir, which provides the Georgian capital with water and electricity. The dam on Aragvi was built in 1985, its height exceeds four hundred meters, its width is four hundred meters. The volume of water in the reservoir is more than half a billion cubic meters.
Next stop in Gudauri at the “Arch of Friendship”. The People’s Friendship Arch is the inspiration of the famous sculptor Tsereteli, it was built at an altitude of 2384 meters in the Kazbegsky district, on the Cross pass near the Military Georgian road, next to the Gudauri ski complex and is a mosaic panel that was very popular among sculptors of that era.
Dinner and departure to Monastery of Gergeti.(Holy-trinity)
The Church of the Holy Trinity (Tsminda Sameba) is a cross-domed church built in the 14th century. The only temple of this type in the Kazbegi district. It is located high on the mountain above the village of Gergeti and the town of Stepantsminda.
“… the white ragged clouds were dragged across the top of the mountain, and a solitary monastery, illuminated by the rays of the sun, seemed to float in the air, carried by clouds” (A.Pushkin, 1829)
Gerget Sameba is an amazing temple. This is a rare case of a temple high in the mountains, at an altitude of 2170 meters from sea level. An unusual combination of architecture and snow. It can be beautifully photographed on the background of the Kazbegi glaciers.
